Paraben-Free Beauty: Rid Your Body of This Chemical with this List of Paraben-Free Cosmetics

products have parabens

“Paraben-free” is a phrase which is doing the rounds in the beauty world a lot these days, without most people knowing what these chemicals really are. Parabens, to simplify it, are preservatives used in cosmetic products. Without them, microbes will fester in our products and spoil them. While parabens are also used as preservatives in food and some medicines, their ill-effects have only come to light recently.

Which products have parabens?
products have parabens
A lot of products we use every day, and cannot do without, contain parabens. Some of these are:

  • Toothpaste
  • Sunscreen
  • Shampoos
  • Conditioner
  • Hair-serum
  • Shaving creams
  • Mascara
  • Moisturiser
  • Deodorant
  • Eyeliner

Why are parabens bad?

While some say parabens do not cause much harm, around 75% of the research done in the subject says parabens are very harmful. They are known to cause numerous problems like:

Cancer

Parabens encourage the chances of getting harmful tumours. The frightening thing about paraben-usage is the spike in chances of getting terminal illnesses like breast cancer, as a result. Those who have a history of breast cancer should definitely stay away from any products containing parabens.

Why are parabens bad

Reproductive issues

Parabens disturb our body’s hormonal balance, and can cause reproductive health issues in both men and women.

Harmful for children

Exposure to parabens can cause developmental disorders in infants, harming their immune system and also leading to learning disabilities.

Premature ageing

While definitely less harmful than the other side effects of paraben absorption mentioned here, parabens, especially ‘methyl paraben,’ cause premature ageing. Since many beauty products contain this, it is rather counter-productive to use them.

Making the switch to paraben-free products

Before you accuse us of being faddists who are attempting to jump on the “organic and natural” bandwagon, we would like to justify a shift in our product preference. Parabens are used by manufacturers because they are an inexpensive preservative which helps them cut costs at the expense of our health. Products can be manufactured without using parabens, so we believe that using paraben-free products will push all companies to take a step in this direction.

Making the switch to paraben-free products

To know if a product is paraben-free, check the list of ingredients for parabens. Look for words like propylparaben, ethylparaben and butylparaben, which are commonly used parabens on moisturiser labels. For cosmetics, search for propylparaben, ethylparaben and butylparaben, which are commonly-used parabens.

Also see if the product uses organic acids like diazolidinyl urea, sodium benzoate, and potassium sorbate, as these are safe preservatives. Herbal and organic products do not contain parabens usually, so they are an option as well.
